8 Things to Do After Exercise To Prolong Happiness

Getting a work out in everyday is an excellent way to boost your happiness and health. Though, there are many things we can continue to do throughout our days to prolong that happiness, leading to improved moods and energy. Below are 11 things to do after an exercise to prolong happiness and give your body a rush of endorphin’s.

1. Drink Plenty of Water

Water is key, especially after an intense work out session. Exercising and sweating hard depletes our body of fluids, so we must re-hydrate to gain back our balance. By continuing to replenish fluids, you can keep your mind and mood happy, clear and alert.

2. Don’t Eat Processed Foods

Following your workout routine with fatty, fast foods or any unhealthy processed food can lower your levels of happiness, leading to an instant crash. This routine will also add on loads of extra calories, unhealthy fats and sodium, which seems to be  waste after an intense workout. Eating natural foods will help your body recover faster, improve energy levels and nourish the body and mind.

3. Eat Healthy Fats

Healthy fats naturally boost serotonin levels, which causes a happy response in our brain. It also helps reduce inflammation in the body post-workouts. Many healthy fats are a great source of proteins, a macronutrient vital for post-workouts. Some great healthy fats to include are avocados, nuts, nut butters, hummus, veggies, fruit etc.

4. Avoid Sugary Beverages & Caffeine

After a vigorous workout, your endorphin rush and metabolic burn are enough to keep your body energized and productive, if properly paired with nutritious, whole foods that have anti-inflammatory, metabolic processes and mood-boosting properties. High, sugary or caffeinated beverages can stop these benefits and effects. They also make you feel a quick burst of energy, that later leads to an energy crash. Stick to water and spruce it up with a slice lemon or lime.

5. Eat Protein

Protein is crucial following any workout, especially for keeping the metabolism healthy, as it raises the metabolism more than fats or carbohydrates can. Protein also helps keep your mood stable and in a happier state for longer periods of time.

6. Keep Stress Levels Low

Though it may be challenging at times, you don’t want to let stress consume your mind before starting out your day, as it can immediately get rid of any happy endorphin’s and slow down your metabolism. A rise in cortisol (a stress hormone) can also cause inflammation, reduce feel-good hormones and metabolic effects. If you run across something that may cause you stress, calm the mind, stay positive and focus on problem solving to prevent further stress and keep your mood stable.

7. Eat Potassium-Rich Foods

Potassium helps re-balance our body’s electrolytes that were depleted after exercise. It has also been found to help improve serotonin levels, a happiness-boosting hormone while also preventing lethargy, depression or brain fogginess.

8. Make It A Habit

One single exercise can offer instant benefits, however the best way to prolong the after-burn and endorphin’s is to keep up on regular exercise. Over-time your body will begin to feel these benefits for hours into your day! Find an exercise that works for you and stick to it!
