Beat the Cold this Winter with These Natural Remedies

As we head into winter, the chance of cold and flu symptoms rise. And while we are all bound to get a cold at some point in our life, precaution is still necessary. Goldenseal. Goldenseal contains an active ingredient known to have antibacterial properties, though it does not create resistance strains of bacteria like many antibiotics.

Maitake mushrooms. This fungi is recognized for it’s immune enhancing benefits. They are also filled with beta-glucans, an active ingredient, which has shown to protect the body during the peak of cold and flu season.

Elderberry. You can find this herb in most online health food store and it’s great for both adults and children. Elderberry helps calm symptoms of the cold and flu while also decreasing the reproductive capacity of many viruses.

Salt water. A salt water rinse (netty pot) can help break up nasal congestion while also removing viruses and bacteria. Mix 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of salt to every 16 ounces of water. You can also add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda for added benefits. Netty pots work best for this remedy and are found in most grocery stores.

A steamy shower. Hot showers are an easy and effective way to clear out nasal passages. They will also help you relax, ease dizziness and may reduce flu symptoms.

Blow your nose softly. Blowing out all that mucus is not only important to clear out bacteria, but it’s also refreshing. However, when you blow your nose, be sure to close one nostril with your finger and gently blow into the tissue. Otherwise, bacteria may lead through the ear passages causing an earache.

Use a salve under your nose. Place a soothing mentholated salve under your nose, or eucalyptus oil (with a carrier oil) to help open up nasal passages for better breathing. This may also soothe irritated skin on and around the nostrils. Just be sure to place the salve under your nostrils, not in the nose.

Sleep with an extra pillow. Elavating your head is a good way to easily clear nasal passages. This also promotes better sleep.

Fuel up on infection-fighting foods. For diarrhea and an upset tummy, eat bananas and rice. Blueberries to help lower a fever, chili peppers (or spicy foods) to open up nasal passages, cranberries to prevent bacteria and infection, and green for it’s antioxidants and antibacterial properties. And don’t forget to eat plenty of brothy soups. The warm liquid along with the nourishing, nutrient-rich broth will help you feel better in no time!
