Look Beyond Rice

Instead of serving a bowl of rice with your dinner, consider switching things up with quinoa, amaranth, millet, or pilaf. These healthy whole-grains require fewer agricultural inputs and are almost free of plant disease. You can look even further and consider adding in other whole grains and foods alongside your favorite meals.

Cut Out Palm Oil

Palm oil is found abundantly in many pre-packaged foods. From peanut butter to cereal and potato chips, palm oil is everywhere. The problem with this oil is the way it is farmed. This includes forest fires and clear cutting, which has been very harsh on rainforest diversity and has a caused a major reduction in the orangutan population. When buying oils opt for coconut, EVOO, and avocado oil and when purchasing chips and snacks make sure they are too are cooked in these oils. It is also a much healthier option!

Skip the Protein Bar

High-protein snacks are usually full of added sugars, palm oil, fillers and harmful preservatives. Instead, opt for healthy, whole-grain products, nuts, seeds, fruits, and veggies. You can also consider making your own protein bars, granola, and healthy snacks from home. When shopping for protein-rich snacks make sure they are organic, GMO-free, have very few ingredients and no added sugars.

Choose a Sustainable Protein Source

Farmed meats including salmon, beef, and pork are some of the earth’s worst enemies. For a more sustainable choice, opt for organic, free-range poultry and certified organic, grass-fed beef and dairy products. You can also get a sustainable amount of protein from whole foods including beans, quinoa, veggies, fruit, nuts, seeds, legumes etc.

Opt for Soft Cheese

Dairy is low on the list when it comes to sustainable food. However, if you must, opt for softer cheese rather than harder cheese like cheddar, as it is less processed which causes less of an ecological strain compared to hard cheese.

Eat More Pears

Instead of picking up a basket of apples, give pears a try. They ripen best when they are off of the tree, which requires less water and they do not need to be rushed off to the market.

Choose Different Grains

Opt for millet or flax instead of corn. Millet has the lowerest water requirement of any grain crop, which makes it an excellent choice for any concerned about water consumption. Most, hearty, whole grains are also gluten-free, contain a good amount of protein and other health boosting- nutrients.
