Evidence continues to prove that compounds in wholes foods do protect our health! There have been many studies showing that people who eat large quantities of fruits and vegetables have a lower risk of chronic disease such as cancer and heart disease. There are many fruits and vegetables found to have high amounts of naturally occurring polyphenols, which have protective health properties.

A recent study found that the polyphenols in green tea and apples prevent a signaling molecule called VEGF, which can provoke atherosclerosis and is a target for anti-cancer drugs.

Polyphenols in apples and green tea help stop the process of cancer progression and development of atherosclerotic plaque.

VEGF is the main driver for blood vessel formation in these cell types by a process called angiogenesis, which is a crucial part of cancer progression as well as development of atherosclerotic plaques and plaque rupture that can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

With the help of using cells from human blood vessels, studies found that low concentrations of polyphenols EGCG from green tea and procyanidin from apples stopped the process of VEGF.

The study has also found that polyphenols activated an enzyme signaling system, which generates nitric oxide in the blood stream, and then helps widen blood vessels and prevents further damage.

If you are eating an apple a day, your on a pretty good track. Studies have shown that those who consume an apple a day were associated with less prescriptions.
