Healthy Oils and Their Benefits

With so many available oil options, it is often hard to choose the right oil that still benefits your health. From avocado oil to EVOO, we have info on all the healthy oil options and their benefits.

Avocado oil is made from the avocado flesh. It is one of the very few oils we can eat that doesn’t come from a seed and has a smoking point of 500 F, (the highest smoking point of all oils). It has become a popular ingredient in many health food products. It’s also an excellent cooking oil, though it is very versatile and can be used in dressings and sauces as well.

Health Benefits: Avocado oil contains high levels of oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat (good for your fats). It’s also an excellent source of vitamin E, improves heart and eye health, and promotes better absorption of nutrients.

Camelina oil is made from the camelina Sativa (an ancient oilseed) grown in Saskatchewan. Its smoking point reaches about 475F, which makes it great for cooking, roasting vegetables and searing your favorite kinds of meat.

Health benefits: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin C, camelina oil is a beneficial oil for cooking!

Coconut oil is one of the most popular oils, packed with nutrients, health benefits and a variety of ways to use it. It has a smoke point of 350-375 F and is made from actual coconuts. Coconut oil can be used in a variety of cooking methods, as a natural massage oil, moisturizer, and conditioner.

Health benefits: Coconut oil has an impressive nutritional content and a number of health benefits for the body inside and out. It’s also a good source of saturated fats and medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). It is believed to improve brain health, boost metabolism, and lower bad cholesterol levels, to name a few.

Olive oil is made right from olives and comes from many different parts of the world. Its smoking point is 320-425F. When it comes to purchasing olive oil, price matters, as the inexpensive ones can be cut with other oils and ingredients. Always stick with organic, cold-pressed extra, virgin olive oils, since they are the healthiest and contain the most nutrients.

Health benefits: Rich in antioxidants that help reduce oxidative stress. Olive oil also contains the compound oleocanthal, in the body it mimics ibuprofen, helping to lower inflammation and pain. It’s also very beneficial for heart health, as it reduces cholesterol levels.

This oil is also made from the seeds and has a burning point of 225-320F. It’s not ideal for cooking, however, it is excellent for dipping sauces, salad, dressings, and much, much more.

Health benefits: Similar to olive oil, Sunflower seed oil can also benefit the heart, lower inflammation and contains high levels of vitamin E. When shopping for sunflower oil choose oils high in oleic acid, which means it contains more monounsaturated fats. Compared to oils high in linoleic oil (a polyunsaturated fat), which are usually less healthy.
