Vitamin A

Brightly colored fruits and vegetables are some of the healthiest foods available, especially when it comes to our vision. In addition to carrots, foods like bell peppers, tomatoes, cantaloupes, yams, and strawberries all offer a healthy dose of vitamin A for healthy eyes. As an added bonus, vitamin A-rich foods also offer up healthy levels of vitamin C, which also improves vision.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are powerful plant pigments, both of which are thought to help prevent the development of macular degeneration and cataracts. Some great foods to add into your diet include leafy greens, spinach, kale, collard greens, etc. Another great source of lutein is eggs, though they also offer up a variety of other beneficial nutrients.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids have shown to help protect against macular degeneration and cataracts as well as dry eye. And while omega-3s are most abundant in cold water fish including salmon, tuna, and sardines, you can also opt for a fish oil supplements to get your omega-3s. For vegans and vegetarians, there are a variety of nuts and seeds available, rich in omega-3 fatty acids including chia seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, almonds, and pistachios.

Vitamin E, Zinc, Bioflavonoids, And Niacin

Whole grains including brown rice, quinoa, and oats all contain an impressive amount of vitamin E, which also helps promote eye health. For zinc and bioflavonoids, include plenty of legumes, like black beans, lentils, and peas. Both of these nutrients protect the eye retina, which can lower the risk for developing an eye-related disease, including cataracts.
