Though they do eventually heal on their own, there are many things we can do to speed up the process. Below are a few dermatologist recommended natural remedies for cold soars.


This one may sound a bit strange. However, milk contains immunoglobins and the amino acid l-lysine, both of which can promote faster healing when you have a cold soar. Simply dip a cotton ball or cloth into milk and gently apply to the affected area. Repeat as often as needed.

Peppermint oil:

Peppermint oil is a well-known remedy for health ailments. It has strong antimicrobial properties that can help kill off viruses, including those around an erupted cold soar. Applying peppermint oil to the cold soar may also promote faster healing. When using essential oils, be sure to always to a carrier oil as well.

Lemon balm:

Lemon balm contains anti-inflammatory properties known to help promote a faster healing time while also preventing future breakouts. You can infuse lemon balm leaves in to and apply it directly to the blister.

Aloe Vera gel:

Aloe Vera is extremely beneficial for skin health and certain skin ailments. Applying the gel the the affected area not only pushes along the healing process, but the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects in aloe Vera are also useful in healing the actual sore.

Ice pack:

Applying an ice cube to your cold sore can help lower inflammation and any discomfort related to the sore. Apply ice pack to the sore for temporary relief. You can also use regular ice cubes wrapped in a towel.

While these treatments are not meant to cure or treat, they can offer relief and promote healing.
